Captions and banners

What it does

A lower-third name, a callout, a subscribe prompt. Each one hangs from a scene and an offset into it, and lasts as long as you say.

Six positions: bottom, top, and the four corners.

The standard behind it

• A layer takes no time in the programme. Removing one leaves no gap, because it never occupied the line — which is the whole difference between a banner and an inserted scene.
• Anchoring is to a scene, never to a timecode. Reorder the script or drop a sponsor in front and the banner moves with the shot it was put on.
• Text is capped at what fits on screen. A caption is a name or a short phrase; a sentence set over a shot is a subtitle, and subtitles come from the narration track instead.
